FOMEN events

Symbiosis-School of Political Studies in Greece, Council of Europe Network, organised an experts’ workshop in Athens on 12th December 2019, in the framework of the project ‘FOcus on MEN’ – FOMEN. The workshop brought together about 20 participants to discuss issues of gender and violence, to feature innovative approaches and critical attitudes that will foster constructive dialogue, producing concrete and viable suggestions. The themes discussed drew from the following project priorities:

  • Combating Gender Stereotypes and Sexism
  • Preventing and Combating Violence against Women, with a focus on migrant and refugee women and girls
  • Focus on Men

The discussion explored how the migration experience impacts on the different perceptions of gender-based violence, regarding views about relationships, family, children and youth, women, sexual exploitation, and masculinities. Experts exchanged knowledge and experiences, good and bad practices, as well as discussed the needs of male migrants and refugees regarding gender-based violence prevention work – themes and contents, reaching out and motivating them – taking into account issues such as language, culture, religion, education, social background, family structures, policing and legal structures, asylum processes (including legal and institutional framework, reception and integration), masculinity stereotypes, as well as the needs of the professionals working in this field.
