Symbiosis provided support and resources to the residents of the Thessaloniki Reception Centre for Refugees and Asylum Seekers, including food, clothes, children’s toys and educational materials, first aid materials, cleaning materials, and aid to the newborns. The event emphasized that, despite the value of volunteerism and philanthropy, in the words of Fazli Mouhtar, an asylum seeker who helped with repairs at the centre during his free time, these

 

‘cannot solve the fundamental problems [that] severely risk the livelihood of the seventy people that rely on the Shelter for their existence’

 

Under the escalating crisis, central and local government services providers, as well as several organisations, seemed to ignore such protective structure and, thus, leaving them to survive only with their own powers, whilst collective and individual fundamental rights were diminished.
